China's One Child Policy

Many of you may want to know more about China's one-child policy, and the background on why more girls than boys are available for adoption. This article is a bit old, but it provides a good overview on conditions in China.

There are a few items that are outdated. Specifically, a few years ago the age requirement for parents was lowered. Couples can now adopt from China when they both turn 30 (it used to be 35). Also, a much greater number of Chinese children are now adopted into the United States each year. If our memories serve us correctly, the number was ~8,000 in 2004. As of 2001, all internationally adopted children become citizens automatically.
