We arrived in Madison Saturday evening after a whirlwind 24+ hours of excruciating travel. It's not that the flying was bad -- except for the Space Mountain flight between Minneapolis and Madison ("This is your captain. We're going to ask that the flight attendants not serve beverages and remain securely belted." Terrific.) -- it was the marathon of sleeplessness while we tried to keep Ava comfortable. Ava slept for the majority of the three flights home, and for that we were very grateful. Our legs were numb by the time we landed and our stomachs a little wonky, as Ava was sleeping in all manner of positions across our bodies and we were just downright air sick. We told ourselves not to move, less we wake her. All in all, that strategy worked out well for us.
Saturday night we all slept long and hard, and Ava only woke up once for her bottle. "This is going to be easy," we said. WRONG!
Ava has had a cold since we welcomed her into our family. She's mostly had a runny nose and a sneeze. Her cold still lingers, but now you can throw in some serious diarrhea and occasional vomiting, some of the projectile nature. Bleh! Bleh! "Nice shot, Ava!" She has been up 2-4 times a night now.
As a result of her sickness, Ava has been slow to eat and slow to drink, but fast at becoming dehydrated. Ava was down about 20 or so ounces of fluid from her usual routine. She was also weak and just not the playful and smiling Ava we had come to know. We also had a difficult time waking her, another sign of dehydration. Needless to say, we were worried about her, so we brought her to the doctor (for a second time in two days) and they recommended we hydrate her intravenously. We spent about 6 hours yesterday at the doctor and hospital. Scott's brother, David, stopped by the hospital and helped us to pass the time while we tried to keep Ava's attention away from the needles stuck in her hand. The few times she saw them, she wanted to yank them out. It was a long day.
Today Ava seems to be feeling a little better, and is eating/drinking more than yesterday, but still nowhere near the level in which she should. The doctor said to keep trying and even a little bit is better than nothing. We hope the virus passes soon.
Meanwhile, we are on poop collection duty for the lab. Just throwing that little tidbit in there in hopes that you are reading this over your lunch hour.
In between all of the ugly stuff, Ava has been a sweetie. We've had visits from both sets of parents and our neighbors, and she was just a little ham. We're happy that she enjoys the company of others, although we are keeping that to a bare minimum for a while as we try to establish strong bonds with her. Today Anne carried her around in the snuggly for several hours and Scott played with her on the floor. She especially enjoyed sitting on a sweater and being pulled along the hardwood floor. It was nice to see her laughing and smiling again.
If we look tired in some of these photos, we are.

I do hope AVA gets better soon! I am so sorry to hear how sick she is. We send kisses, hugs, and get well wishes1
Ava Brackett et al.
You had me at "projectile vomitting." :)
So happy you are home. Sounds like quite the trip! Several of my posts are not included on this blog... hmmmmmm. Wonder what happened with that. But, nonetheless, we are VERY EXCITED for you all! I'm sure Ava will thrive with the love of her new mom and dad. :) Bill sobbed like a little girl when he read your blog about going home. Gotta love him.
Anyway, I hope the sick days are few... and that you begin to settle in more and more each day so that you can just enjoy each other and the time you have together. Welcome home, Ava! Right where you belong.
Can't wait to meet her! Love you guys a lot!

So great to see more pictures again...congrats to you two for mustering up the energy to post more info...I know you're exhausted.
It's so neat to see pictures of you and Ava in your home! (in the highchair that's been waiting for her in your dining area, and by her exersaucer in the living room, in her new carseat, etc.)
...and, how do you manage still looking good even when you're so tired???
Glad to hear Ava seems to be feeling a little better today. Hopefully, she'll continue to improve each day.
Lots of love & hugs from the Meyers...
Take care, you three!
:-) Donna.
Hi Guys!
I'm sooo sorry Ava is sick. :( It sucks when your child is sick (especially when they can't tell you what's wrong).... enjoy the extra snuggles you'll get though.
Thanks for the poop info... I just read another blog that mentioned that as well. We went to the doc for Gracie's cold and they are having us back next week for all the shots, blood work and "samples"... I didn't remember how they got the poopy samples... yuck!
Take care!
Lisa :)
Ahh - the parenthood crash course. I remember it well, including the IV fluids. But never fear - the kids always get through it easier than the parents!

Glad to see you back online. Seems you're getting the full intro to parenting class in your first week home. Hope Ava gets better quickly!

Ah, welcome aboard, new parents. There are always a few things about parenting that don't get enough advertisement in advance as they should.... like poo, bedtime, teething, vomiting......
... but before you know it Ava will be negotiating for a later bedtime so she can spend more time on the X-box commanding the Death Star (or insert appropriate sci-fi reference here).
It was great seeing you guys on Sunday morning for a couple minutes. You look great.
Thanks for sharing these special details of your new family. We are so happy for you all and are so lucky to know you guys.

Glad to have you back in the US again. I am sure you are glad to be in your own beds and home again. Been there with the poop collection for the lab and the vomiting, ah the joys of parenthood!
Ava is such a cutie and I think once she gets over her cold she will keep you busy.
Take care and hope that Ava feels better soon!
Just sitting here eating lunch and getting caught up with your blog...thanks for the poop duty comment! Had to laugh as I popped another mouthful of food in my mouth! So glad you're home, hoping that Ava is feeling better!
